AIC Teacher invited to Oxford

AIC teacher Roma Kaur has just been to the UK where she joined top class academics at Oxford University to reveal her research on third language learning, undertaken here in New Zealand.

Roma Kaur, one of AIC’s teachers of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma, presented her research on how students who are studying a third language process their thoughts and ideas when confronted with a problem.

The research has identified that it is not enough to teach just English vocabulary, grammar, comprehension or writing in the classroom, but also the history and wider culture of the English speaking country. They should be able to experience the food, life style and other aspects of culture to be able to embrace the language

“It’s a golden opportunity to present my research and represent AIC at the University of Oxford,” comments Roma.  “ I look forward to meeting renowned language researchers from some of the best universities in the world. “

Anne Willmann, Principal of AIC, comments, “This is a school that values academia, and we are proud to see one of our teachers recognised by such a prestigious university.  Roma’s in-depth knowledge of linguistics is a real asset, greatly appreciated by students, and by her colleagues.  We are delighted to see the quality of Roma’s work being recognised in this way at Oxford.”

Staff and Facilities

AIC provides a learning environment conducive to academic achievement. Classrooms are modern and technologically advanced. Rooms are equipped for multi-media presentation, and Smart Boards (interactive whiteboards) enable teachers and students to work together to interact with a variety of media. Classroom web cameras enable a parent to log in and view their child in class.

Internationally recruited, experienced, dedicated teachers from a variety of cultures and backgrounds engage students with a range of approaches to learning – from small group work to the use of sophisticated information technologies – in order to ensure that all students are catered for, and that their communicative skills are developed throughout their course.

A multi-media library and technology centre enable AIC to access, research and retrieve information globally. The library, science laboratories and art suite have all been designed and equipped to meet the rigorous IBO standards.
